Position Summary

The Customs Broker is responsible for classifying imported goods and processing complex import transactions for an assigned portfolio of clients. This role involves advising on U.S. Customs regulations, valuation, and compliance procedures while ensuring all import activities align with company standards and legal requirements. The position requires strong analytical and communication skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to train and guide team members.

This position typically reports to a Licensed Customs Brokerage Manager, Import Operations Manager, or Branch Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Classify import items and determine applicable duties and tariffs.
  • Process complex import transactions, including Customs and other government agency releases.
  • Develop and maintain written procedures for client accounts, including billing, classification, valuation, and post-entry processes.
  • Audit brokerage files and payments to Customs for accuracy and compliance.
  • Stay current on U.S. Customs regulations and participate in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) training or seminars.
  • Communicate with clients regarding regulatory changes and potential issues in the import process.
  • Provide excellent customer service by proactively updating clients on shipment status and addressing inquiries.
  • Maintain all customs compliance documentation and manage internal databases.
  • Train new employees in import systems and compliance processes as needed.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Required:

  • Active Customs Broker License.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations, valuation, and classification.

Preferred:

  • At least 2 years of experience in international transportation, logistics, or customs brokerage.
  • Coursework or degree in Supply Chain, International Business, or related field.

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent mathematical skills; ability to calculate freight measurements and conversions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for client correspondence and problem resolution.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to compile and analyze data from multiple sources.
  • Ability to perform import specialist functions as needed.

Physical Requirements

This position requires regular use of a computer, telephone, and other standard office equipment. The role may involve occasional stooping or reaching. Vision requirements include close and distance vision.
